MOTOR CARS COLLIDE MAN STRUCK BY TRAIN AND KILLED. MANY PEOPLE INJURED. AUCKLAND, March 18. Further details ot the serious motor smash on the Awaiti-Netherton road on the Hauraki Plains show that a car driven by Mrs Tom O’Carroll, of Kopuarahi, was returning home from the races, when a largo cor owned by Mr E. E. Marshall, of Pipiroa, driven by Mr Joe Ivan, travelling in the same direction, endeavoured to pass. This car struck tho other with such force as to push it over into a drain at tile side of the road, capsizing the car with its occupants. The force of the impact caused the second car to slew rouna and run into the drain, where it turned a somersault. Willing hands from other cars which arrived aided Mr Hans Morrison, who lives opposite and hearu the collision, in extricating the occupants of the wrecked cars. The most seriously injured in Mrs O’Carroll’s car were:—Miss Mitchell, of Kopuarahi, severe bruises and slight concussion and a broken nose; Mrs Coombes, bruises; Mr Jt. E. O’Carroll, deep outs in the left hand and forearm and bruises. The sufferers were taken into the residence of Mr Morrison and were later attended by Dr Little, of Paeroa. The occupants of Mr Marshall’s car (four in number) were thrown clear, with the exception of Mr Ivan, who was pinned under the wreckage face down in the drain. Had it not been for the timely assistance of Mr H. Morrison and his brother, Mr Ivan would have been drowned in 2ft of water. By an almost superhuman effort tho Morrison brothers succeeded in lifting the car sufficiently for Ivan to be extricated. An examination of his injuries revealed severe skin abrasions and bruises, and it is feared that some ribs are broken. MAN KILLED ON LINE STRUCK BY SPECIAL TRAIN. The mutilatod oody of a man aged between 55 and 6u years was found on the railway line near Wharepoa by a surfaceman who was proceeding to work. . Papers found on the body indicated that the man was John Stewart Patty, a widower. It is surmised he was waiting for the train at "Wharepoa station, and may have fallen asleep sitting on the edge of the platform, being then caught by the special train and killed outright. The inquest is to be held this afternoon. KNOCKED DOWN BY A CAR PAEROA RACES INCIDENT. In attempting to dross the road near the racecourse while motor traffic was at its height, Mr J. Adams, of Hamilton, was knocked down by a mo-tor-car, receiving severe bruises and a sprained left wrist. Returning from Paeroa to Auckland, a car overturned near Waitakaruru. Beyond the fact that the car was badly injured, no other particulars are to hand.
