SECOND TEST TEAM
COLTS SHOULD'BE TRIED. AN IrvUEREST ING SELECTION. (Special to “N.Z. .Times: 1 ’) VALMERSTON N., March 20. .‘.‘Cover-point,” an authority cn the game, *" writing in the..... “Aianawatu Times,” indites an open letter to the Dominion selectors, ’ suggesting that the second Test bse utilised far the “nursery development of Silver" Perns.” On the assumption that a New 'Zealand team is ■ going away 'somewhere next yebr or so, the writer thihks Dacre, Dempster, Alloo or McGiriy- Blunt, Worker, and Dickinson are the only members of the first eleven -likely to prove a profitable investment in the “Futurity Stakes,” and as. a minimum of 14 players will be needed a search for eight fresh men to make the complement is necessitated. For that purpose the Christchurch Test team 'should "he constituted on the following foundation i—Dickinson (bast “express” available); Allcott. f left-hander). with T. C. Lowrv ns captain and eight, colts, namely, Boon (keeper), Crawford.' Oliver and Cox (Canterbury), Newman (Nelson). Barclay (Wellington), Gallichan (Manawatu), and an Aucklander, who must .be at least a change bowler; W: R. Garrard, if. hot out of the “colt” category, with Banks (Wellington) as reseryo. Nine of this'dozen .already have distinguished themselves' against Victoria, and the remaining three——l.owry, Gallichan. and ' Newman—-would give the side a truly representative flavour. If the dozen produces only four New Zealand “cans” there* are still seasoned •players additional to Allcott. to complete the touring team, men of the stamp of Bernau (Hawke’s Bay), Saxon INelson). Holland (Wanganui), and Lambert ITaranaki). There would be at least seven trundlers in this second Test eleven, with Dickinson and Allcdft the opening pair. If sound Opening batsmen are absolutely essential Worker should be included, and one of the twelve dropped. Lynch (Southland) ayiparently is worthy of a trial, hut only if he is a member of the younger brigade. -The writer commends the suggr»‘.ion of Mesars Williams, Cargill, and Brice, with a view to meeting Maine and the Victorians half-wav in ,their obvious desire to improve the standard of the game and unearth fresh talent, pointing out that three-dnv Tests are likely to result in stalemates, in which 'i
case the: .benefit ,of cricket is problematical; therefore it would be better to give “colts”. a chance under 'Test conditions to confirm the good fornr they, already have displayed.. •: *
