There arrived by the Alarama yesterday from Sydney a distinguished New Zealand soldier in the person of Major Fred Stain;s, D.S.O. Major Staines left Now Zealand with tho Main Body as an officer of the Canterbury Regiment, and served on Gallipoli and in France. He obtained his D.S.O. in France, snd was a member of tho “Hush Hush” party which was dispatched for special duty to tho Casjpian, and foi his lecord there he was elected a member of the Royal Geographical Society of London. At, the termination of the war Alajor Staines went with Colonels Geo. C. Griffiths and A. D. Stitt to British E»Gt Africa ito take up land.
