BRITISH TRADE
TENDENCY TO IMPROVEMENT. PROGRESS VERY SLOW. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received. March 1, 11.5 p.m.) v ’ . ‘ LONDON, February 28. Reviewing the state of trade generally, the newspaper “Economist” says: “During January there was. a small but definite expansion. The advance, however, has not been fully maintained during; the preeent month. There is less unemployment than a year ago, but the figures are still very high. The expansion of. .trade has not been sufficient tp make a substantial impression, and there are large numbers still To be absorbed into employment. That progress has not been more rapid is due primarily to the absence of any forward movement embracing all the more important industries at any given time. Each in turn tends to have periods of improved trade, but as long- as the others languish the net result is unsubstantial.”
