A WORK OF CHARITY

THEIR EXCELLENCIES AT THE HOME OF COMPASSION.

REV. MOTHER CONGRATULATED.

His Excellency the , Governor-General and Lady Fergusson are interested in all genuine, works of charity. Perhaps the greatest of these in all New Zealand is the work which has been carried on for a quarter of a century, by the Rev. Mother Mary Joseph Aubert and the hard-working and'self-forget-ting Sisters of Compassion in their homo at Island Bay. . . \ Without any special invitation His Excellency the Governor-General and Lady Fergusson paid a Visit .to the Home of Compassion on Saturday morning, and renewed their acquaintance with the aged . Rev. Mother, of whose great work among the suffering children, the chronio invalids and the Maoris they had knowledge of through their respective fathers, both former Governors of New Zealand. The meeting, after . all/these years, was' therefore a very happy one, and His Excellency made a point or thanking. the. Rev. Mother for the manner -in wliioh she had devoted her life to the poor and suffering of New Zealand, and congratulated her on the evidences of its expansion. , Before they left the institution, both Sir Charles and'Lady Fergusson insisted on visiting the children’s wards, and made a point of shaking hands with each one of them. This .delighted the children, and,.the Rev. \ Mother afterwards expressed 'the opinion that it was a very gracious act on the part of Their Excellencies. They intimated their intention . of. coming again, to Which the Rev. Mother said, with 5 a twinkle in her eyes, they would be welcome at any time between 9.30 a.m. and 10 p.m.
