Dr. E. Gordon Anderson left by tbe Aorangi on Saturday on a visit to Australia.

Tuck, of Wellington, was appointed to the teaching staff of the Gore High School by the Board of Governors at its meeting on Tuesday. Mr Tuck has bad about 14* yean* teaching experience, most of which has been spent in New Zealand—viz., Nelron College five years, and Auckland Technical College four and a half years. The other four years-have been spent at Barking Abbey Secondary School, in Ebscx, England. Mr Tuck will' commence duty at Gore at the end of March. ♦ Mr Robert. Gillon. who. after over forty years with the department, latterly as chief mechanical engineer, has now retired on superannuation. Mr Gillon joined the service ae an apprentice at the Hillside workshops, Dunedin, in 1884. and worked bis way to the top. on the road and in headquarter) office. The presentation.- which wm made by the chairman, of the board (Mr F.. J. Jones), consisted of a very handsome nui'se of sovereigns, and' with it went the best wishes of the fellow-officers and members of tbe branch'. At present the service was in a state of reorganisation. . and it was for the men to prove what .their capabilities were.. The founder of the firm of Minton and Co.. Mr William Minson. died,in Christclmrc]) on -Friday at the age of 82. Hd was born in Huntingdonshire in 1843. and- arrived in New Zealand 33 years ago. He retired from business about 2o years ago. and entirely severed his ■ connection with tbe business in Colombo street 10 rears ago. For many years the late Mr Minson took an active interest in local affairs. and was a prominent memhey of the Board of Governors of tho .Christ-qh-urch Technical College. He was chairman of the Technical Committee which formulated a scheme of technical education in -Christchurch. He was also chairman of the commusfcp' which visited (many parts of the pravinoe'tritaVe evidence ort the farm labourers’ dispute which occurred' about IS . rears ago. He was an active member of the Canterbury: Chamber of Commerce and the. Industrial Association, and was chairman of tbe Home Ind”striee Committee of' tbe exhibition held i» Christchurch *in 1906-07.
