AUCKLAND CREDITED WITH GREAT PERFORMANCE. PRIZE PRESENTATION. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. March 1. Yesterday was a heavy day. in the band contest, and the proceedings did snot, conclude till half an hour after midnight. The quickstep competition was held in the afternoon. Slight showers of rain fell for the first time during the contest. The attendance Was estimated at 12.000. The inarch played by A grade bands was “Jack o’ Lantern” (by W. Rimmerl. This is.a particularly charming piece, ' containing many haunting passages, and was exceptionally well, suited for repetition. The piece for B and C grades, was “The British legion.” Mr Percy Code judged the music, and the military judges were Captain L. Andrews. V.C.. Captain Bittmer, M.C., and Staff S.M.’s Walker, Smeal, and Green. Drill is the deciding factor in quickstep events, for the higher points'are allotted in this department. Auckland Artillery, winners of. the A grade quickstep, gave probably the finest exposition ever seen in Auckland. The drill! movements were magnificently executed affd evoked'great applause from the crowd. It was easily the finest performance of the day. The music was excellent, and the tempo almost perfect; only 2-sth of a second out in 100 yards. Detailed results aTe: — A Grade Bands. The prizes : were presented by ; Sir James Gunson. Malvern Tramways secured. the A' grade shields . and the McLeod ■ .Cup. Otago Artillery ' Band won: the B grade shield, and! Ponsqnby Boys’ Band the C grade; The -winners all.,were given a great reception by a surprisingly Jarge number of people who waited till lifter midnight, -Malvern being Recorded & particularly-hearty greeting. ’
