SIR CHARLES AND LADY FERGUSSON INTERESTED WHY PUBLIC INSPECTION WAS CANCELLED
AORANCI LEAVES FOR SYDNEY TO-DAY
The Union Company’s mammoth motor-ship, the Aorangi, arrived in the stream at 7 o’clock yesterday morning, and half an hour later had berthed at Queen’s wharf. Owing to the early hour there was not a great attendance on the part.of the public, but a splendid view of her was obtained from the surrounding hills, and her majestic proportion's stood out the more conspicuously as she approached the wharf and lay close by the Maheno, which was preparing, to sail for Sydney. During the morning crowds of people went on the wharf to see her, and excellent arrangements for the direction of traffic were made by the Harbour Board. The old part of the wharf was reserved for passenger traffic on the “keep to the left” principle, and vehicular traffic was directed along the new concrete portion, thus averting, any danger or collisions. Those who had received special invitations inspected the ship morning and afternoon, and were profoundly impressed with her magnificence, finding her quite up to the published descriptions. Others particularly interested were engineers, marine and shore officers, and crews from other vessels in port. Their Excellencies Sir Charles and I-ady Alice Fergusson inspected the vessel in the morning, and had morning tea with Commander R. Crawford. The Aorangi is scheduled to leave Wellington to-day for Sydney.
