POOR WOOL: SLOW SALE

CHRISTCHURCH AUCTION. PRICES EASIER. Par Presa Association. * CHRISTCHURCH, February 2T. The fourth Christchurch wool sale <A the season was held to-day, a catalogue of 9300 bales was offered. Naturally, with the advance of the season, the wool was not in anything like the condition of the earlier offerings. It was heavy and seedy, there being a very small proportion of bright attractive clips. Super lots were exceptionally few. The. sale was slow, and buyers generally appeared to have very sharply defined limits. Prominent purchasers at former auctions also had very small commissions, judging by their lack of competition. Bradford bought more sparingly than usual, but the competition (for crossbreds) was more noticeable than formerly. American participation was small, and was confined to the best lots of Corriedale and halfbreds. Local mills were notably silent, except in one case. The fellmongers secured a larger share than usual of scouring lots, this being the most favourable local auction for them this s«^on. A DROP OF lid TO 3d. A comparison with the prices of the last sale is not a reliable guide as to the relative values, as to-day's catalogue was the worst in condition. However, on several lota of three-quarter and cros.sbred carried over from the previous sale there was a slight easing, although there were a few cases of to-day's price being over a penny better. Depreciation was marked on fine wools. Good lots were about a penny easier, but shabby halfbreds showed, in cases of passed-in cli|>s t a recession on last sale of about 2d lb, and about lid to 2d would make the average. Merino, apparently, was nqt wanted, and most of the merino offering was passed. Fine wool prices also were lower. The passings throughout were fairly substantial. In the total catalogue of 9240 bales the passings represented 21 per cent k RANGE OF PRICES. Merino, to 27Jd; medium, 23$d to 25dj inferior, 20d to 23d.
