Another member supplemented this statement by remarking caustically: “And the majority of the wife deserters are either grey or blue-eyed men.” It was also reported that the number of occupied beds in the hospital during the past week had been in excess of 500, and was the highest on record. The committee reported that three certificated nurses who had recently completed their training andl left came back to help during the rush of the epidemic (Nurses Webster, N. Holmes, and McLeod). It was resolved that these temporary nurses be paid at the rate of £IOO per annum. There are ten V.A.D.’s engaged on the nursing staff, and are very helpful in easing the work of the nurses.
