RAPID GROWTH
GREAT NEW FORESTS. TREE-PLANTING IN ROTORUA DISTRICT. IVr I'ross Association. ROTORUA, February 26. Yesterday large numbers of the members of the Press, .who have, been in conference here, were snown over the Government nurseries and forest reserves. During their stay here they have taken a great interest in the method of propagation and growth of the thick woods that clothe the many hills behind Vvhakarewarewa, and have received much information from officers of the department. In particular the rapid growth of tnc Californian redwoods lias been a great surprise. Where the locality is suitable, and there is not too much wind, redwoods at Rotorua grow nearly as fast as pinus insignis. They far outstrip the native trees. In the reserves there are specimens 70ft in height, which could be i»vled to-morrow if required. Few of the visitors realised, the enormous amount of work done in treeplanting. There is an idea of constructing a road tnrough the plantations so that not only may a drive through these great forests be added to the usual sightseeing trips, hut the public may also obtain an insight into the magnitude of the operations of the department.
