It is generally believed on the waterfront that there will be no concerted or drastio action on the pert «yf the ship-owners unless their hands are forced by extreme union action. Members or the Maritime Union are disconcerted by the" (move of the. interstate shipping companies in paying off the craws of eight 'vessels at Melbourne and Geelong. The shipowners state that. the laying up of these vessels, which are colliers, has no connection with the shipping trouble, and that they., .would nave been taken out of commission in any ease this season.
