EMPRESS THEATRE

“CAPTAIN JANUARY.” The change of programme which wa* presented at . the Empress Theatre yesterday was greatly enjoyed by the big holiday audiences which attended-both at the afternoon and evening sessions. Besides starting another season of Mr Beaumont Smith's screen trials, Baby Peggy was presented in her latest released picture, “Captain - January.” Mr Smith reports great success in his screen trials, and has to date put through over 250 applicants. Despite tbd fact that there are still names coming in it will be found possible to give all a trial, a thing it was at first thought impossible to do. The picture side of the programme, including as it did the usual excellent supports, is particularly attractive. Babv Peggy’s new effort is her latest, and by far her best. It tells the story ot a little girl who ia washed up at a lighthouse, and is taken care of by the old lighthousekeeper. When she is about five years old some people appear who claim her a their child, causing great consternation to . the. old keeper, who has played mother, father and relatives included for so long. There is a series of most interesting occurrences, and the ending is particularly happy, showing' as it does the old man cared for by the newlyfound parents, and the little girl happy in the thought that she ia not to lose her old chum. Hobart Bosworth is the lighthouse-keener of the story, and Babv Peggy is admirable as the diminutive “Captain January.” There is a splendid supporting holiday programme, and the Empress should be packed at its sessions from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.
