SCIENTIST RETIRES

PROFESSOR SLR E. DAVID. PROF. COTTON T.O SUCCEED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright, SYDNEY, December 26. Professor Sir Edgeworth David has retired from the ohair of geology and physical geography, after 33 years’ service. Profetsor Cotton will succeed him.

Professor Sir T. "VV. Edgeworth David is one of the best-known and most popular scientists in the Southern Hemisphere. He is now 66 years of age. He was educated at Oxford. He was appointed professor of geology at Sydney University in 1891. In 1897 he led an expedition to the Ellice Mauds; and in 1907-09 was scientific officer with the Shackleton Antarctic Expedition. In that expedition he conducted a special party to the South Magnetic Pole, which was reached on January 16tli, 1909. In 1910, after recruiting the Australian Mining Corps, he enlisted for active service, and served on the Western Front in 1918-19 as geologist to the British Armies. He is well remembered in New Zealand by those who met him during the visit of the Australasian Association ror the Advancement of Scienco.
