PRACTICALLY DESTROYED

BISHOPOOURT, CHRISTCHURCH. FIRE STARTS IN CHAPEL. Par Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Deceinher 25. Bishopcourt was practically destroyed by fire early this morning. Bishop Julius had not been residing there for seme "years, and until recently it had been utilized as a hostel. With His Grace’s coming retirement, a new hostel - was secured, and Bishopcourt was occupied by the Rev. Hubert Jones pending the appointment and arrival of the i-ew bishop. Whon the Rev. Jones retired at 11.30 o’clock on Wednesday night everything was secure, but an hour later a smell of smoke awoke him and an investigation revealed that a fire bad broken out in the roof of the chapel. The brigade was summoned, but before it arrived the fire had obtained a good hold of the building, which was an old one of two Btories with a shingle roof, and it .was well over an hour before the fire was under control. The fire also spread to the newer portion, which is of brick and slate, the roof being considerably damaged. The interior suffered to a lesser extent.
