NOTES AND COMMENTS

The Riccarton contingent for the Auckland Racing dub’s meeting, consisting of Limelight, Footfall, Starmist, Count Oavour, and Tarleton is expected' to arrive in Wellington today on its way north. The steepleohaser Sir Roseberry has been brought in again by,W. Garrett, but he will not be asked to do anything until after the holidays. He will then get some easy work in view of the autumn steeplechases. The Australian-bred, filly Sunbar is doing userful tasks at Elierslie under the guidance of J. Williamson, and is coming along satisfactorily. The two-year-old Bank Draft was not produced at Woodville last week on account of a slight cold. He is to go to Elierslie with Killoora. .H. Wiggins has been engaged to ride Motley in the Auckland Railway Handicap. Motley has been freely entered for other events at the meeting, wh,ioh makes it arppearr that she’ has made a good recovery. After the racing at Woodville, W. J. Donovan sent Tiega and Bennaneo home, and will go on to Auckland with Kick Off. Duo, Runnymede and another . Mr E. S. Lufctrell has sold the three-year-old gelding His Majesty, by Kilbroney—Bebe, to the Ricoa-rton trainer, J. B. Pearson. His Majesty is a half brother to Oupidon. but so far his form has been ■ moderate. Ecuador is being worked lightly in Southland to give him a chance to recover from the injuries he sustained when he was galloped on- in, the Stewards’ Purse at- Winton'. The rider of Listening Post. A. E. Ellis, was fined £5 for interfering with Ecuador in tho race in question. Deucalion has made a good recovery from the injury to his shoulder, which troubled him after tho South Canterbury meeting. He looks big and well as a result of his short Test, and he is now moving along nicely in useful tasks. No holiday engagements have been made for him, hut he will be ready for racing again early in the New Year. T. H. G’illet has Count Oavour looking in good order at present. He appears to ho none the worse for his races at Biiccarton last month, and from the manner in which he gets through his track work he will he an improved horse when ho steps out for the Great Northern Derbv on NewYear’s Day. A letter from Mr M. J. Hannon, president of the Oamaru Trotting Club, states that the pacer Albert Cling died from a complication of troubles,

brought about by his fall prior to the start of the Sprinters’ Handicap, tho concluding event, at Addington last month. Tho horse was jointly owned by Mr Hannon and his trainer. J. Henderson. who had control of Albert Cling throughout his career. It was the intention of the partners to race him in a few more sprint events this season and then pension him off. Right and Left is a horse that may havn a chance in the Auckland Cup, says a northern writer. He is not a great beginner, but if he got into a handy poeition at the start and was allowed to run along, the son of Merry Moment might beat more than beat him. His track work recently has been good, and one would not begrudge Mr J. Thorpe, whoso luck has not been of the best for some time past, getting the big end of the purse.

Mr J. R. McKenzie has received a letter from the AVest Australian Trotting Club, inviting him to send Acron to Perth in March, to compete in a series of races, over one mile and a quarter, one mile and a half and two miles, for tho Australasian championship. Provided satisfactory arrangements can be made, it is probable that Mr McKenzie will accede to the request and send Acron to measnre strides with the best Australian horses in this contest. In the meantime, an Australian buyer is negotiating* for the purchase of Acron, but it is certain that Mr McKenzie would require a big sum as an inducement to part with his champion. Riccarton stables will be well represented at the AVest Coast holiday meetings, among the horses engaged being Prince Ferouz, Castellan, Fresco, Empyrean, Ferino, Quality, Squint, Kilbirnie, Relic, Carpsntier, Pickaninny, Deep Drive, Sayonara, Griin Joke, Tempo, Will Oakland, Lytup, and The Reaver. From other parts of Canterbury, Solferino, Agnola, Vice-Regal, Fairy Herald, Prosperity, Kuia, Brown Lady, and Marzoin will assist, while there will be a good contingent of North Island horses. Altogether the prospects for the West Coast circuit are particularly bright. An interesting feature in connection with the meetings to be held on the West Coast during the holidays is that tho hurdle races havo attracted very large fields, there being abo tt twenty horses in preparation for these events. The Manawatu Racing Club has decided to shift the judge’s "box at Awapuni hack 30 feet from its present position, and also to raise it six feet higher. Tho Woodville District Jockey Club contemplates changing the position of the judge’s box on its course to a similar position to those on the Riccarton and Trentham courses. The Now Zealand-bred mare Lady Hau, by Lucullus (imp.)—Lady Nivelle, won the 14.2 Handicap at the Ascot (New South Wales) meeting' on November 29th. Golden Mixture, by Kilbronoy (imp.)—Medley, and therefore half-sister to Ballymena, won tho Ascot Handicap on the same day, starting at a remunerative price. Aroha Nui, by Lucullus (imp.)— Mabeno, an ex-Auckland mare, won the Bendigo Handicap at the Bendigo Jockey Club meeting on November 26th. In a .work out with Great Bingen, at Canterbury Park at the latter end of last week Acron fell. At first it wag thought that no was injured, but inquiries made proved that he is little the worse for the accident. It is 15 years since All Red won his second Auckland Cup under 9.1, and no horse has been able to win the raoe since carrying more than 8.9, while on only three other occasions in the whole history of the event have horses carrying over 9 been successful. Nelson, who won three years in succession, carried 9.8 and 9.12 in his last two t ictories in 1886 and 1887, tho race at oho period being run over two miles and a-quarter. It was not till 1903 that Walriki won under 9.8 oyer she present course of two miles.

WELLINGTON AUTUMN MEETING

PROBABLY AT END OF MARCH. It is understood that the difficulty respecting a date for tho Wellington autumn meeting has been overcome, end that the gathering will take place the last Friday and Saturday in March. The Manawatu autumn meeting, most likely, will be held during the week following.

RACECOURSE SMASHES '

AND THE PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE. The recent remarkable series of racecourse smashes has so stirred public feeling that it is difficult to believe that the authorities will remain inactive for long. The blame for whatever neglect there has been in the past lies at the door of the Racing Conference and the Ministerial head of the Department of Internal Affairs. In the present Minister, however, the racing public are represented by a man who has taken a keen interest in his new portfolio, and big improvements are hoped for. The Minister is cm the box seat, and it need occasion no surprise if he is a means of compelling the conference to do the right thing in some important respects A committee of members of Parliament will be set up early in the New Year to inquire into all aspects of racing. and the questions which arise out of the recent fatalities and accidents should then be fully gone into. It is inconceivable that the committee will leave alone this phase of its business.
