SHOALS IN COOK STRAIT. , An examination recently performed ty the Government steamer 'putanekai shows' the existence of a shoal to the northwestward of Jackson’s Head in the fallowing position -. —Latitude 40deg. 56.4 mm eouth, longitude 174 deg, 19.8 min < not, Jackson’s Head Beacon bearing 168dag., distant Si-miles; Walker Rock and Cape Koamaru extreme in transit bearing 157 deg.; Lambert Point and the high part of overhanging cliff in transit bearing 231de.g. Tha least water discovered by the Tutanekai when anchored on the shoal was 28ft at mJ.w.6. The shoal is rocky and of, small area, having soundings of 16, 15, and 20 fathoms rocky bottom close to. Vessels of moderate or deep draught should keep at/toast two miles to the north-eastward of a straight line drawn between Cook- Rock and Stephens Island as other shoal rook patches, having depths between 8. and 19 fathoms over them, and which have not yet been examined, are reported ’to exist between Stephens Island and the 28ft shoal to which this notice mainly relates. j MAHANA FOE LONDON.
