WEMBLEY
A revival of the Wembley Exhibition is in the air, and many of the guarantors have agreed to forward the same. We hope New Zealand may he found amdng them. It is a question of advertisement. Unquestionably Wembley, has proved, sq far, the very best advertisement the Empire jointly and severally ——so to speak—has ever had. It has cost much. All advertising costs something, and when advertising is full and complete it is profitable whatever the cost. The Empire is to-day laying the foundations of future greatness on a basis of co-operative effort. To succeed it must know itself. In other wordß, all the resources and capacities, all the wants and wishes, all the necessities and requirements, of all the parts must be known, each to each. That knowledge will provide the foundation on which all can work together. As a matter of fact, there is no other foundation possible, still less in sight. , That meanp that this foundation must he found- at any cost. It is a necessity of the life of the Empire. Wembley has so far done much in this direction. It may, indeed, be said to have done wonders. Many wise, far-seeing heads are of that opinion. If Wembley continues,it will continue in the same direction. The foundation basis will be strengthened. The only objection to the continuance is the cost. It is quite true that so far the cost has been great. But it is also true that continuance will not be as costly as the first essay. Whatever the ultimate cost, the basis will be strong. There is gain as well as loss. The gain, taking it as an Imperial story of ages of, History, is enormous, and incalculable. The loss—the cost aforesaid of Wembley—on the , other hand, is definite, and in comparison a bagatelle. If the great volume of gain is to he spoilt because of the modicum of cost, it will ho had business.
