EASTBOURNE BOROUGH

m popjjjjAr mmoßTi •wonderfur beach: 'klrzt magnmicent, . ’ I BJJJMi . j -Hie borough of-Eastbourne is comprised principally , of two bays, Kona Bay and Muritai, for the old area known in years gone by as “O-Kiwi-iti,” or the land of the little kiwi, has long been submerged into the other two. Muritai means'"beneath, the tide,”: but histoty does not record whether it was so named on account of being thrown' up out of the sea, or for what reason. ’ For many years past Eastbourne and; Day’s Bay hare been ' recognised as popular seaside resorts,’ But. in the last few "years its claims as a residential area have also been more fully realised, and the population, which only a few years ago was a, mere handful, . now numbers over 2000. looking at what futitre developments inky ' be, that number should treble in the next decade, but it should be noted that the level area in the -borough is capable of carrying a .population of,- 10,000 without approaching anything in ■ the way- of ovOr- 1 crowding. . < THE FERRY SERVICE. . : < The ferry eervioe is naturally a .great, if not the greatest, asset the borough posseeses, and it was .successful almost from the time it, was taken over from the Ferry Company. A night service, was inaugurated, and was appreciated to such an extent that it’ has contiiiued ' ever since. The addition of -thp- t.s.s. Muritai a year or so ago has put the borough in a position to be able to cope with all traffic, and allhough last year there were occasions when the evening demahdwas „ excessively heavy, it is a feather in the cap of the management that no visitors were ever stranded there for' lack ,af accommodation. . . - y - • In purchasing a .boat of .the description of the Muritai, the Eastbourne Borough Council were , looking a little beyond the immediate future. Naturally, it is an expensive boat to run when-not carrying full loads, for which reason it was, a wise policy ."to pursue to lay her up for the .winter months, wben the Duchess and Coßar were quite capable of EandEng the traffic. It is anticipated fliat this sfeason the influx of visitors will be greater than ever, while’ the steady increase - in new buildings indicates a growing popularity as a residential area. The business man from the city reaches his home in half an- Hour or a little more, and can rest in quiet away from the continual hum of traffic, or spend his leisure hours in-the garden, on the tennis courts,' the howling green, Or in the lovely bush 1 . From Muritai Park a magnificent panoramic . view of. tho snowcapped Kaikouras, glistening in the Bun; can he obtained.in one direction, and in the other a wonderful picture of the Hutt Valley, with' its. mountainous background of bash and reserve. As regards shopping, there are ample facilities for; obtaining do- . mestio requirements of all kinds. The milk supply is by near-by farmers, and the post office, with" telephone, is in the Centre of the bor- ' ougb. In iho course of a few weeks it is anticipated that the longlooked for supply of electrjo light and power from Msmgahao will he available, and will he greatly appreciated. Everything is in, readiness, and the day oh whicH electric light, electric ovens, ' and eleefrio irons will all be available is hot far’distant.

WILLIAMS PARE.

.While not now part of the borough of Eastbourne, it would be an omission .when writing of the borough to say nothing of Williams . Park, at Day’s Bay; This is the trippers’ paradise, with every facility for spending a day in futy enjoyment. The pftrk itself is a magnificent' reserve of hush, frdm Which the Orongorongo and Wainui reserves are within reasonable distance. Inside the gateaof tho park are play areas, where juveniles and adults can play their games. Tbe climb through the bush is well worth the trouble on account of the glorious view obtainable,, and tho beauty of the hush itself is worthy of observation, with its bird and animal life. There is a large tea kiosk, and hot water can be obtained by picnic “parties. If, in addition, one can secure a peep into one or two of. the private gardens of residents on the hill, notably that of Mr Archibald, which has been laid out without destroying the native bash, and which grows a wealth of glorious blooms of all kinds, and native trees and ferns, one feels that a day at Day’s Bay and Eastbourne has indeed been well spent.
