FROM ATLANTIC TO PACIFIC
NEW ZEALAND-BOUND LINER PASSING THROUGH PANAMA CANAL. Many New Zealanders have stepped ashore at Colon. Balboa, and Panada, and have contrasted the Mexican and American methods of control —mnehto the advantage of the United States. At Colon the difference is most marked. On the Mexican side—that is beyond the Panama Canal Zone —the administration is very lax, while inside the wired confines of the. American quarters there is activity, efficiency—and cleanliness. In the year 191.5, vessels to the number of 1075 passed through this wonderful waterway, while last year 3967 vessels mado the passage without mishap. Tljjis year it is estimated the number will reach 5000. The amount of tolls collected in 1915 was 14,343,383 dollars, in 1923 the amount had risen to ■ U7,ii&8,199 dollars, while this year it is estimated the amount will reach 24,000,000 dollars! No wonder Uncle Sam looks'pleased at the marvellous increase in revenue during the ten years the Panama Canal has been opened.
