TO BE CLOSES
WEST COAST LIGHTHOUSE "CHEAP AND FALSE ECONOMY.*’ Per Press Association. HOKITIKA, October 14. The Marine Department notified the Hokitika Harbour Board of its intention to discontinue the. upkeep of the lighthouse on Sea View Hill, Hokitika, and inquired if the board was prepared to maintain the light at its own expense. A special meeting of the board to-day, resolved: "That ‘this board, which maintains the harbour lights at Hokitika, cannot undertake either the responsibility or cost-of maintenance of the coartol light on Sea View Hill which is over a mile distant from the harbour, and was established for the service of intercolonial and coastwise vessels. At the same time seeing that the Hokitika light is the rnly one between Puysegur Point and Cape Foulwind, a distance of 360 miles, avd the cost of maintenance is under *2IOO per year, the intention of the Marine Department to close it would appear cheap and false economy.”
