EYESIGHT SPECIALISTS
PROSECUTIONS AT AUCKLAND. USE OF TITLE OF “DOCTOR.” Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, October 14. Mr Poynton, S.M., gave judgment in the prosecution of three eyesight specialists, Edward Smith. Conrad F. McWilliams, and Edward O. von Sturmer, far. having practised a branch of medicine under "the title of “doctor.”. The magistrate said accused used a sign at, their business places stating that each was a Doctor of Optics, the use of the term doctor being permitted only to registered medical practitioners. If optics was a branch of either surgery or medicine an offence had been com. mitted. There was no doubt about the skill of defendants, wlio had been many years in practice, and of their high standing. He held that optics were not a branch of- either surgery or medicine, and dismissed the oharge, differing from another magistrate who had convicted in a similar case. ’There was, he added, need for legislation to ensure that only properly qualified persons were allowed to practise as opticians.
