HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. THE HUTT ROAD BILL. The monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council was presided over by Mr A. I. Mackay yesterday. In his report for the month ended September 30th the county engineer (Mr A. H. Benham) said, in reference to county roads, that the western highway was in fairly good order, except between Paremata and Pahautanui, which stretch required patching. The lorry will be pul on this road during tho ensuing month. The surface of the Day’s Bay road required patching throughout its entire length. It is hoped to effect repairs this month. .In regard to a letter from Mr W. P. Robinson, who requested support for a proposal to make weather forecasts available to farmers, the council decided to give the necessary aid. HUTT ROAD BILL.
A letter was received from Messrs Brandon, Ward and Hislop, which stated that a number of .traders were raising objection to the Hutt Road Bill. At a sitting of the committee, at which traders’ representatives were present, the objections were withdrawn. There was an amendment placed in the bill to the effect that any motor trader within the area who is not in possession of a second-hand car on March 31st each year, shall not be called upon to pay tax on such car until it is leased, hired, sold, or bailed to some person. It waß not thought the amendment would prejudice the council. The result would be that the number of cars available for tax would he diminished.
The county solicitors were informed that the new clause will be agreed to.
