VICE-REGAL His Excellency the Governor-General* Viscount Jellicoe, will lay the founda-tion-stone of the Dunedin Exhibition on the afternoon of October 13th. Mr Vigor Brown, of Napier, is a visitor to Wellington. Mr J. Card, Mayor of Featherston, Is at present in Wellington. Master Alex. Wenham, of Master ton, is seriously ill in the Masterton Hospital. His Honour Mr Justice Adams will leave Christchurch to-morrow for the West Coast, where lie will conduct a sitting of the Supreme Court. Messrs B. L. Salmon, hon. secretary, H. I. Graves, hon. treasurer, and W. G. Bryce, of the New Zealand Football Association, return by the ferry steamer to-night from Christchurch. Mr A. M. Gilmonr, of the Atlas Assurance Company, Ltd., has arrived in Christchurch from Auckland to take over the managership of the company’s branch. Processor W. E. Thomas, Mus. Doc., is retiring from the position of organist and choirmaster at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Parnell, Auckland, which he has held for the last * 22 years. „ Mr C. M. Hallard, of the VanbrughBoucicault Company, is at present spending a few days at Mount Cook. He will return to Christchurch od Wednesday. The late Mr S. J. Dyer, of Napier, whose death occurred in Sydney, will be interred in the Karra i cemetery. The funeral will be held to-day on the arrival of the Maunganui. Mr Frederick Parker, who, since January, 1916, has been manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Dunedin, has practically completed 48 years’ service, and will retire on superannuation on October 31st. Reference was made at the Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen's Association smoke concert to the illness of Mr G. Pirie, one of the oldest . members of the association, and a vote was passed wishing him a speedy return to health. Messrs B. L. Salmon (hon. secretary), ’H. I. Graves (hon. treasurer), W. G. Bryce, and H. D. Warner, Wellington members of the council of the New Zealand Football Association, went to Christchurch to see the Soccer test match. Messrs Campbell, Ballard, Thomas, Ewing, and Innes, of the New Zealand" Soccer team which played in the fourth test match, returned to Wellington by the ferry steamer yesterday. Innes goes on to Auckland by-the midday" express to-day. Messrs Gordon, A. R. Cornish (Sydney), A. G. McGowan (Wellington), A. Sherlock (Wellington), G. W. Wilson (England), A. E. Bedwell (Sydney), G. Rundle (Melbourne), and W. ACoates (England), arrived in Christchurch on Saturday. Mr R. B. Morris, late Secretary of the. Post ’and Telegraph Department, who has disposed of his interests in Wellington, will, with Mrs Morris, go to South Canterbury, to settle on his farm, “Sunridge,” at St. Andrew’s, some 17 miles from Tim aril. After he completes las farewell tour of the world, which starts this autumn, Sir Harry Lauder will probably seek, to represent some constituency in the House of Commons (says a London, paper). Sir Barry was talking about this the other day, and said that h« had had heaps of invitations. Mr R. L. Wigley, managing director of the Mount Cook Motor Company, who has been in Wellington, returned south on Saturday. Mr Wigley intimated some time ago that he would stand for Parliament at the next election, biit owing to the pressure of business he finds that he will not be able to do so. Among those who went south over . the week-end were Messrs Marcus Marks, A. V. Shorter, A. M. Gilmour, A. W. Newton, R. Evatt, H. P. Poole, F. Gill, N. E. Aitken, J. Doherty, M. A. Carr, J. F. Carr, V. Oswin, L. F. Inch, D.. Hebenton, S. Natusch, W. J. MoKeon W. E. Banders,' and R Lyon. Capt&W O. H. Mead,' DiS.O., N.Z.S.C., staff officer in charge of No. B Regimental District (Palmerston North), has been appointed staff officer in charge of No. 5 Regimental District (Wellington city and eoburbs). vice Major E. Puttick, D.S.O.* N.Z.S.C., who has been appointed Assistant Quarter master-General at General Headquarters. Captain Mead served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force throughout the Great War, and in 1917-18 commanded the 2nd Battalion, Canterbury Infantry Regiment, on the Western Front. , Mr G. E. Fowler, town clerk to the Waipukurau Borough Council, tendered his resignation at a special meeting of the council. Mr Fowler, in his resignation, stated that he had been appointed secretary to the Central Hawke’s Bay Power Board. The Mayor in accepting the resignation, said that he did so with feelings or regret at losing the services of so capable an officer as Mr Fowler had proved himself to be. Mr Fowler, continued the Mayor, had never spared himself. When he first took up the position he was not conversant with borough routine, but he had set to work and made a study of the matter. The council were losing a good man and the Power Board Mere gaining one. It was decided to enter in the minute book an appreciation of Mr Fowler’s services. Mr Henry Allison, who died at Christchurch on Thursday, aged 77 years, was a well-known figure in Canterbury. He was born at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, and arrived in Lyttelton with his parents, the late Mi and Mrs Charles Allison, in the ship Isobella Hercus in 1856. He had lived in Christchurch ever since. Practically all his business career (53 years; had been spent with Harman and Stevens, Ltd. For thirty years Mr Allison was secretary of the South Waimakariri river board, which has recently been reconstituted as the W aitnakariri River Trust. He had been a director of the Christchurch Building and Land Society for thirty-five years, and ohairman of directors for the last " twenty-three years. The late Mr Alii, son was keenly interested in literature and science, and was a member of the New Zealand Philosophical Institute, and of the Canterbury Natural History t and Microscopical Society.
