The oxy-acetylene process of breaking up ships is a slow and costly one, this method taking an army of workmen, provided with acetylene torches and flasks of oxygen, at least six months to cut up ’a (ship of 5000 tons into pieces of ccrap of a size suitable for the smelting works. Bv a method just patented, a Hamburg firjn, it is claimed, can with a comparatively small number of men break up a ship in one-fifth the time. The new German. method makes use of a rotating disc cutter supplied with -oxygjsn and fixed on specially constructed slips. By this means metal plates of any thickness ere expeditiously cut, and even thick armour plgtes of battleships can be remuneratively handled in the same way. A crane running on rpilp alongside the ship makes it possible to apply cutting discs at f-ny point, the cutters being adjustable in a horizontal .or a vertical direotion. In cases where a floating dock is available, pieces of scrap can he loaded on barges as cut for transport to furnaces. The inventors claim the apparatus can be used in connection with an ordinary revolving crane, if necessary—a method especially useful in the oase of smaller yards, where vessels of lesser tonnage eie broken up. BELGIUM’S MERCHANT MARINE. A statement recently published by the Belgian Marine Administration shows that on January Ist, 1924, the Belgian merchant marine was composed of IBS seagoing vessels, representing 381,297 tons net and 542,657 tons gross, 180 being steamers and 3 sailing vessels. These figures show a reduction of 7 ships compared with a year ago, but am increase of 10,038 tons net and 14,870 tons gross. Thirty Belgian ships were sold to foreign owners in the course of last year. On January Ist last there were 49 Belgian steamship companies registered, among which the principal ones were the Lloyd Royal Beige, with 54 Bhips, and the Armesuffit Deppe, with s%p.
