TRAMWAYS DISPUTE

AGREEMENT REACHED INCREASED WAGES GRANTED TO MEN. HOURS OF WORK UNCHANGED. The Conciliation Council was engaged yesterday morning in the hearing of the Tramways Union dispute, and after lengthy consideration agreement was reached, which really amounted to an advance of Id per hour in wages, as well as the adjustment of certain conditions of minor importance. Mr W. H. Newton (Commissioner) presided, and assessors appeared on both. 6ides, Mr W. A. W. Grenfell appearing for the City Council, and Mr A. L. Monteith for the Tramway Union. The agreement was reached after considerable discussion, and the rise in wages will affect a large majority of the workers. The hours of work remain as before. The recommendations were forwarded to the Arbitration Court, in order that the new award may be formulated. It was agreed that the award should run for a year, and that it should operate from the 3rd inst.
