INDIVIDUAL UNIVERSITIES

FEDERATED SYSTEM CONDEMNED. AUCKLAND COUNCIL'S RESOLUTION. Per Proas Association. AUCKLAND, July 7. The important question of granting autonomy to the four university colleges of New Zealand was discussed by the council of the Auckland University College to-day. The acting-president, Professor Thomas, said the professorial board had carried the following resolution: “But the board is of opinion that on account of the continually-increasing difficulty of carrying on university work under the federated system, the time . has arrived when the question of creating individual universities in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin should be seriously considered.”

The board also proposed that a commission bo appointed for considering whether a rate for universities should be created, and, in the event of any steps being taken to make recommendations as to the constitution and powers and distribution of the funds, now administered by the University of New Zealand. The council resolved: “That colleges should receive autonomous powers in the matter of studies and the granting of degrees, and requests the Government to appoint a commission.” The council suggested that a prominent educationalist from outside New Zealand he invited to act as chairman of the commission.
