SENSATIONAL ARREST
ALLEGED POCKETPIGKING DETECTIVES’ EXCITING CHASE AFTER SUSPECT. TAKES REFUGE IN HOUSE. A sequel to an alleged offence of pocket-picking was enacted yesterday morning, when Detectives Hunt and Jturold arrested a man named Frederick Courtney in Portland crescent. In December last two suspects were arrested, one of them, Christopher Martis, absconding from bail. The other, Francis Osman Burke, stood his trial on a charge of stealing £5 in money from John Singleton, and was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. Yesterday morning, in the vicinity of Hawkestone street, the two detectives mentioned above happened to see Courtney, who is believed to be the third man concerned in the Whittaker street episode, and whose whereabouts was not known to tho police. The suspect was addressed by Detective Hunt, but Courtney, on seeing that he was approached by two police officials, promptly showed a clean pair of heels. The detectives followed in hot pursuit. After sprintfor about 600 yards, the quarry endeavoured fo take refnge in a house in Portland crescent, but he was arrested before he could disappear. The accused was remanded to the police station, and he will appear before a magistrate this morning.
