AUSTRALIAN PREMIER CESNURFD FOR RECENT SPEECH. “THE NATION’S VIEWS.” Bv Telegraph.—Press' Assn. —Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, July 4. Commenting on Mr Bruce’s recent statement that the Imperial Government’s unsatisfactory reception of the preference resolutions did nbt give much encouragement to deal with the recommendations of the Eoonomio-Gon-. ferenco, “The Nation” says it wishes Mr Bruce would rid himself of the habit of attempting to put indirect pressure on Britain in regard to Sugar pore and preference. “Australia has every right to refuse ratification of any proposal of which she disapproves on its merits; hut veiled threats to turn down one recommendation merely by way of retaliation for the rejection! of another does not conduce to -the relations we desire to see within the Empire; nor will it promote the acceptance of Mr Bruce’s -news., “It is fear of this sort of thing .becoming common that forms one of the main objections to Imperial preference itself.”
