THAT BALANCE-SHEET
QUESTIONS AT EASTBOURNE. AUDITOR’S REPORT. The Queen Carnival at Eastbourne in 1923 was again discussed by the Borough Council at its lost meeting, following on a request by Councillor E. A. Dawson for the balance-sheet. He said the counoil was being blamed fur the delay, and he thought it was lime something was done. The general manager ot the borough had acted as organiser of the carnival, and there were councillors on the executive committee. A large sum of money had been handled, and the public had a right to know how it had been spent. Councillor H. W. Shortt (ActingMayor) declared that the council as a body had nothing to do with the carnival. The executive committee consisted of members of the various sports bodies of Eastbourne, and at their wish Mr Witty had been appointed organiser. The auditor (Mr Marsden) had handed the balancesheet, together with his report thereon, to the Mayor (Mr F. H. Mather) just prior to Mr Mather’s departure for England. The Mayor had handed it on io Mr P. Levi, deputy-chairman of the carnival executive, who had called a meeting, but only himself and Mx AVitty had attended. “The balancesheet and report are open to anyone who desires to peruse them,” concluded the Acting-Mayor. Councillor H. J. Levy: Oh, no, it isn’t. I asked to 6ee it, and was told it didn’t exist. The general manager (Mr R. B. Witty) said that members of the executive had been notified by letter of the meeting, but as it was a very wet night they failed to get a quorum. Councillor H. M. Jones: I didn’t get any notice. No such letter came to me. . Mr Witty: It is proposed to hold' a meeting next week. Probably on Thursday. Councillor Dawson: What has the auditor to say about it? I mean the Government Auditor. A borough cheque oook was used in paying the accounts, with the borough's name printed thereon. Mr Witty said that sonic cheques had been taken from the back of oue oi the borough’s cheque books to opeftte on the account, which was at the 6ame bank as the borough’s account. Councillor Shortt: That was quite & wrong thing to do. The matter then dropped.
