A SUCCESSFUL MEETING MUNRO ESTABLISHES AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. RECORD. INTERESTING CONTESTS. Beautiful weather prevailed on Saturday for the Wilson benefit athletic sports meeting, which was held at Athletic Park, and which was attended by between 3500 and 4000 people. A very interesting and well-arranged programme was submitted, and many good performances were registered, the most noteworthy being that of P. Munro in the throwing the discus event, in which he did 137 ft, thus lowering his own recently-created Australian and NW Zealand record by 4J feet. This meeting marked the final of the Dewar Shield competition, the shield being won by the Wellington Club, with an aggregate of 150 J points. The points won by the other clubs are as follow:—’Varsity 106, Athletic 27f, Selwyn 25, Olympic 20, Marist 13, Hutt 4, Brooklyn 4. CHAMPION RECEIVES AN OVATION. A wonderful demonstration was accorded to Harry Wilson when he made his appearance on the ground, and later the boys of Wellington College marched on to the ground opposite to where he was sitting on the stand, and cheered him to the echo ; The ovation was taken up by the crowd, and for a couple of minutes the park resounded to the lusty cheering of thousands of voices. While the sports were in progress, Mr H. S. Alpe, the well-known longdistance walker, completed on the ground a walk from Petone to Wellington, having done the distance from post office to post office, seven miles, in one hour twenty minutes, beating his own previous record by ten minutes.
