The Union Comp v any advise that the R.M.S. Niagara, from Auckland, arrived at Suva at noon yesterday, and sailed at 8 p.m. in continuation of her voyage to Honolulu, and Vancouver. TOROMEO AND T.ALAWA. The Australian. Commonwealth Line steamers Toromeo and Talawa have been handed over to their Japanese purchasers. They both left Sydney on February 28l;h for Newcastle to load bunkers. The Toromeo will afterwards go to Melbourne and Adelaide, and will then sail for Japan, via Sydney. The Talawa will take in a cargo of coal at Newcastle for the * Philippine Islands. HUGE PROPELLERS. Probably the largest propeller blades of any vessel in the world have been cast in the Philadelphia foundry of William Cramp and Sons, for the former German steamer George Washington, which was taken over by the United States when the war ended. The contract calls for two new three-blade screws which will be 2ft Bin in diameter, and each composed of three blades bolted to a hub. They were cast of the highest quality bronze, with a tensile strength greater than steel. ELECTRIC-DRIVE DREDGE. The pilot house control station of the new sea-going electrically-operated dredge of the United States Engineering Corps contains all the control apparatus for directing tho navigation of the ship. Wheels control a propeller motor and the navigating officer can start, stop, reverse, and change the speed of either or both motors by merely turning the wheels. Meiers on a panel above the wheels give tho navigator full information concerning tho operation of each piece of apparatus under his control. The dredge is the largest vessel to use the Diesel electric drive, a system recently [perfected by engineers. Two 800 horse-power Westingliouse motors, power for which is supplied by three 1000 horse-power Diesel engines driving 800 kilowatt generators, form the propelling machinery of the dredge. MAHANA FOR AMERICA. The Mahana, under the agency of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, is due on Tuesday next from Auckland to discharge Liverpool cargo. From here she proceeds to Lyttelton and Port Chalmers to complete. At the last-named port she commences loading for New York. Boston and London,xand continues at Wellington. TRANS-PACIFIC SERVICE, j The Hauraki, frpm Pacific Coast ports, via Auckland, was expected to leave Melbourne yesterday for Adelaide and Sydney. She loads at Pacific Coast ports in May for Wellington, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney. The Waiotapu loads at Newcastle next week for Honolulu, proceeding via Suva. From Honolulu she proceeds to Pacific Coast to load early in May for Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney. The Wairuna, from Auckland, left Fanning Island on Monday, Match 10th. for Vancouver, where she is due about March 25th.
