A LAWLESS CITY
GLEANING UP PITTSBURG SALOONS BOLDLY DEFY CIVIC AUTHORITIES. TROOPERS CLOSE THEM DOWN. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Gable Association. (Received March 20, 7.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 19. A telegram from Pittsburg states that the clean-up movement in American cities extended to this municipality when mounted State troopers rode through the streets and closed 600 saloons, ostensibly selling non-alcoholic beverages, upon the orders of Governor Pineliot, who issued a statement condemning Pittsburg conditions. Lawlessness flourishes in the saloons, which are openly and boldly defying the constitution of the United States. Illegal beer, and other liquors are being sold boldly, and in many instances poisonously raw beverages are dispensed. Many drunken men are found all oyer the city, and the Federal prohibition enforcement and local police raids seem to have had little impression. Governor Pinehot threatens to keep troopers in the city until the eviU are eradicated.
