SURPRISE FOR PALMERSTON NORTH. The recent statement by the Mayor of Palmerston North, Mr F. J. Nathan, that the cost of the completion of the gasworks had been under-esti-mated to the extent of £25.000, was corroborated at the Borough Council the oGier evening (says a Manawatn daily), wllfen a special committee presented a report on the whole position. The eoThuvo of the Short street gasometer was TTe subject- of a brief debate, the result of which was the derision to call m expert advice. The Mayor’s analysis of the electric light finances revealed the startling fact that tne balance-sheet shows n deficit of £20,000, and with extras still necessary, the sum of £35 000 will have to he found to complete the scheme. To provide for this, the council deoidecF to approach th#> ratepayer! for authority to borrow £35,000.
