OBITUARY

MR W. J. HOWEItL, OTAKI. ' The many friends of Hr W. J. Howell will regret to learn that he passed) away at the Otaki Hospital on Sunday morning (writes the Otaki correspondent of the “Times”). For several months past the decease ! had been in very indifferent health, but he nevjr complained, and bore his illness with great fortitude, being cheerful to the lost. The deceased, j who was 5 4b years of age, only entered 1 the institution the previous day. He \was one of the most popular and most hum an o settlers on the coast. He was born at Pahautanui, where he resided till, he was 13 years of ago. At this age ho took up residence at Paraparaumu, where ho had laboured faithfully and well ever since, doing many acts of kindness, all his life. The late Mr Howell was a valuable member of the Hutt County Council for many years, did fine work as a member of the Hoiwhenua Patriotic Association, and took an active part in all matters tending to the improvement of Paraparaumu, where he was looked upon as “Chief Magistrate,” and naturally his death has caused a shock to a very large circle of relatives andi friends. The late Mr Howell leaves a widow and family of seven to mourn their loss, the members being Douglas, JEric, William, Kemi, Marion, Elsie, and Mona. Deceased was the oldest son of Mr AVilliam Howell, an old and respected resident of Paraparaumu, and much sympathy is extended to him, the bereaved wife and. children. Jack, Frank, Lem and Bert Howell are brothers, and Mrs R. Maclean, Mrs Malcolm Maclean, Mrs Heffer, Mrs Cornor, Mrs Clume, and Mrs G. W. Taylor are sisters of the deceased, and all will have the sympathy of many friends. Deceased will be buried at Paraparaumu to-morrow, when members of the Masonic Lodge will attend.
