According to advices received from America, Chilean interests are preparing to establish a triangular service between the North. Pacific, Australia, and the West Coast of South America, with two motor ships, to be purchased from Belgian owners. The motor ships will be about 7,000 tons deadweight, and are to be transferred to Chilean register. The idea is to load them with lumber from the Pacific Coast to Australian ports, then with coal from Newcastle to South America, and then with nitrate or general cargo for the Hawaiian Islands or Pacific Coast ports. If this fast motor service is finalised, Newcastle coal will probably go forward in greater quantities to tho West Coast than has been the case for some years. Australian merchants will also have an opportunity of opening up a market for Australian commodities in the South American centres «*»• NEW PHASE OF SHIPPING. Considerable interest has centered round the question of motor ships during the past month, in view of the fact that an order was placed for a 20,000-ton oilenginer liner, and a Government guarantee given for M, 800,000, to the Bank Line, for the construction of nineteen motorcargo ships under the Trade t’sciLhe* Act. In this connection it is, therefore, of importance to analyse the respective fuel consumptions of corresponding steam and motor ships. In this month’s “Slotor Ship” details are given of the fuel used on a steamer and a motor vessel, over a period of about six months. The hulls are of exactly the same dimensions and the average speed at sea, in both oases, 10 8 knots. It is shown that the steamer, which is oil-fired, burns practically three times as much oil under its boilers as was required, in the Diesel engines of the motor ship for the same period In exact figures it is found that the steamer covers 7.12 miles per ton of oil, and the motor ship 19.6 miles per ton.
