SHEFFIELD SHIELD

VICTORIA’S TOTAL. GOOD STAND BY PONSFORD. By Telegraph.—Press Assn —Copyright. (Received January 29, 12.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 28. The Sheffield Shield cricket match continued in fine weather on a good wicket. Mullarkey took Scott’s place, the latter haviug strained a leg on Saturday. Victoria have lost nine wickets for 323 runs (Mayne, in, 135; Love 31; Ponsford 110). The scoring was very slow at the commencement, the batsmen being afraid to take risks and Mailey, who was in great form, spinning the ball well. The partnership between Mayne and Ponsford was very dreary at the seart neither batsmen taking chances. After luncheon Ponsford livened up and batted superbly, driving and cutting delightfully and using nis feet well. He scored 90 while Mayne was hitting up 60, batted 167 minutes and hit eleven 4’s. Macartney bowled in best form, keeping the batsmen quiet, but the fielding again was had, catches from Mayne being dropped three times and ponsford once.
