HOPE ABANDONED
MANY MINERS ENTOMBED. BIG EXPLOSION. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 27, 11.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 26. A telegram from Shanktown, Pennsylvania, says that hope has been relinquished respecting 40 miners entombed to-day through an explosion in the Lancashire mine. The rescuers reported finding dense black-damp and water rapidly rising. The fanhouse was wrecked and poison gas was found in the mine.
