ABANDONED FARMS
WAITOMO DISTRICT. NEED FOR CAPITAL. TE KUl'l’i, January *6. A local farmer, discussing the plight of settlers in the Waitomo district, said there was great opportunity for the men who had capital to take up this country. “If a burn can be accomplished and the right grasses sown,” he said, “the land will he better than ever it was. It is no use a man taking up this land unless he is possessed of oapital to work it up. The experiences of former owners will guide anyone in treating the land in a proper way. The soil is good, of its elate; but, owing to the heavy rainfall, cannot be treated in tho same way as country in other parts of the Dominion. “The trouble with the Waitomo district is that in many cases tho price paid for the land whs too high from the start,” said another authority. “The country can he made to pay if properly handled and there are not too heavy interest charges.”
