AN UNLUCKY SPILL OUTSIDER WINS ZEALANDIA HANDICAP. SOME GOOD DIVIDENDS. (By Telegraph—Special to “Times.”) AUCKLAND, January 26. The Takapuna Jockey Club’s summer meeting opened at Devonport to-day in fine Weather. The course was in splendid order, and there was a large attendance. The programme opened with the Trial Handicap, for which Quaestor, Bungahunga, Kuhio, Libertas, and General Pryde failed to keep their engagements, leaving a field of twenty-three. When doing her preliminary Miss Vera ran across the course and Doug las Latour collided with her. Mitchell, the rider of Miss Vera, was carried off the course, and Goldfinch received a shaking. Mitchfell was bruised, Miss Vera was withdrawn-, and Thompson replaced Goldfinch on Douglas Latour. URALLA WINS TRIAL. Whotunui was made favourite, carrying about £230 more than Golden Glas3, with Uralla, Titanees Tressillian, Praiseworthy, and Te Hiwi supported as named. When the field settled down Titaness was in front from Sunny Roe, Uralla, Desert Glow, Praiseworthy, and Drawbridge, and she led to the bend where Uralla took charge from Desert Glow, Titaneas and Praiseworthy. Uralla held her own to the finish, winning by three-quarters of a length from Desert Glow, which beat. Drawbridge by a neck. Then came Te Hiwi, Golden Glass, and Titaness. GOOD FIELD FOR ZEALANDIA. Ruapapa, Prettyman, and BonnyCanny were missing when the numbers were hoisted for the Zealandia Handicap, but a good field' of seventeen whs left to contest the stake, which ended in an outsider (Himpo) winning, and returning nearly a soore and a half. Fi-om a good start Smoke was in command. When the back stretch was fairly entered upon, a challenge came from Alfort and Cool Stimulants, but Jolly Gay took charge a little later, with Sentinella, Himpo, and Cool Stimulants handy. This order was maintained to the straight, with Broadwood and Alfort next. Halfway down Himpo had headed Jolly Gay, but was immediately challenged by Broadwood, the latter boinlg a head behind Himpo at the finish. Jolly Gay was half a length further hack third, and then came Alfort. Sir Burnett, Cool Stimulants. Sentinella, and Royal Abbey. Jolly Gay carried only half a dozen tickets leas than Himpo, there being 274 on the winner and 268 on the third horse, while Broadwood had over £I6OO invested on his chance. SECOND FAVOURITE WINS HAURAKI HANDICAP. With the exception of Take Take all went to the post for the Hauraki Handicap Hurdles, for which Mr J. Bull's All Melodv was made a better favourite than Penona, with Lark Hall less fancied. Bustler, Canowindra, and General Rose were next in request. When the field got into their stride Awareka was in front from Kilcoo, and passing the stand tho order was Awareka, Kilcoo, Greekson, Grand Canyon. Penona. Lark Hall, Bustler, General Rose, and All Melody. Penona piloted the field along the back from Grand Canyon, Lark Hall, Greekson, Kilcoo, Awareka, and Bustler, and was the first to turn for home, with Lark Hall, Greekson, and Bustler handy. In the turn to the post Lark Hall challenged, hut failed to reach Penona by a head. Greekson was a length away third, half a length in front of Bustler. Landbird, Galileo, Grand Canyon, and All Melody were next. MUSKETOON JUST GETS HOME. The whole of the acceptors, with the exception of Glen Canny, went to tho post for the Takapuna Cup. Boomerday wae always favourite and carried more than Ngata, with Musketoon less fancied. Te Kara, Landslide, Ruapapa, Marble Bell, and Loyal Irish were supported in that order. Tinokaha had hit the front when the straight was reached, and lod from Sycorax, Tinopono, Loyal Irish, Ngata, Gold Jacket, Stork, Musketoon, and Boomerday, with Landslide and Marble Bell last.

Tinokaha was first into the back stretch, but Ruapapa was rushed to the front and piloted the field, Tinopono, Loyal Irish, Te Kara, Musketoon. and Ngata being his nearest attendants. Ruapapa was still in front around tho bend and into the straight, with loyal Irish, Musketoon, and Te Kara handy. Musketoon was brought along at once in a line for the judge, and going on won by a short neck from Ruapapa, which beat Tc Kara by a length. Surveyor was a neck away fourth, and then came Ngata, Stork, Gold Plane, Marble Bell, Gold Jacket, and Tinokaha. The favourite did not get too good a passage along the back, and this spoiled his chances. The winner returned a very useful dividend. FERRY HANDICAP TO AEROFORTIS. Titaness, who had started earlier in the day, was withdrawn from the Ferry Handicap, leaving seventeen runners the bracketed trio (Aerofortis, Merry Prince, and Far North! was made better favourite than Te Kuri. whilethere was alfo good support for Thunderclap and Archibald, the other competitors all carrying under four figures each. Aerofortis was in front when the field passed the stewards’ stand, with Te tahi. Royal Fame, Thunderclap. Te Kuri, Archibald. Steel Bar, and Merry Prince racing as named. Aerofortis still led along the back, but at the beud Merry Prince had run up second, with Steel Bar, Te Kuri. and Boynl Fame next-. Aerofortis was first into

the straight, and ivell ridden by J • O'Shea secored by a head from To Kuri, who beat Royal Fame by three-quar-ters of a length. Thunderclap teas half a length away fourth, with Merry l’rincc, Irene Bruce, and Bright Gift nest. MASTER 1)00X BEATS FAVOURITE. Orchils and Velopia were the defections from the Calliope Handicap, for which the bracket Quinette and Master Lupin was installed favourite, carrying more than Voltore, with Lady Rewa. Day Guard, Master Doon, and Gold Fern next sought after. Master Doon and Chairman were first out, and the former piloted tho field to the straight from Voltore, Jiouliora, and Quinette. Voltore endeavoured to get on terms but failed by half a length- By the time the post was reached Quinette was a neck away third, half a length in front of Lady Rewa. Prince Lupin, Houbors, Gold Korn. and Day Guard were the next to finish. WHANOKCVS COMFORTABLE WIN. Peter Amans was made a hot favourite for the Orewa Handicap Hurdles, for which Silverton, Hyginas, and Pencna were scratched. Star!and, Whanoko, and Miss Melva were supported as named, while Mahgoloire was the outsider of the field. Rosullus was soon in tho van, but by the time the stewards’ stand was cached Mahgoloire was just in front of Rosullus, with Whanoko. Peter Amans, Active, Battle Song. Miss Melva, and Ditto next. Rosullus again drew away before the back stretch was reached, but at the far bend Rosullus was done with, and Whanoko and Mahgoloire were in charge. Whanoko was first into the straight, and holding his own won by a length from Mahgoloire, with Active one and a half lengths away, followed by Peter Amans, Rosullus, Miss Melva, Hattie Song, and Ditto. Starland fell at the second hurdle, but Chaplin, his rider, was uninjured. SUSPENDED FOR INTERFERENCE. E. Warner, rider of Mahgoloire, was suspended for a month for interference aitii Rosullus. KING MERV IN FORM. With the exception of Vaccination all those carded for the Stewards’ Handicap went to the post. The bracket (Prince Abbey and King Merv) was first in public fancy, with Namutere, Finelli, Royal Blood, Pavo, Lady Ridicule, and Tactful most sought after of tho others. King Merv showed out at the start, but Finelli soon ran to the front, and led by about five lengths to the bend, with King Merv, Namutere, Royal Blood, Pavo, Lady Ridicule, and Tactful next. As they crossed / the top King Mery began to overhaul Finelli, and once into the straight headed her, and going on won by threequarters of a length from Tactful, who came with a late run. Finelli was third half a length away, a head in front of Royal Blood. Then followed Prince Abbey and Lady Ridicule.
