HOW THEY RAN

THE EVENTS DESCRIBED CARAWOCK BEATS VAGABOND. Carawock was sent out favourite for the Wallaceville Highweight Handicap. He was last leaving the straight and Palamon was out in front, with his rider sitting straight up hanging on to him. Palamon was done with half a mile from home and Santiago went to the front, hut at the bottom of the straight Carawock took charge. He Eut a break of several lengths on the eld, and though Vagabond challenged he went away again in the last hundred yards and won by a length. Malingerer was a poor third, and Santiago was fourth. GLOAMING AGAIN. Gloaming was at hie usual short price when he went to the post for the Waterloo Stakes, and Nigger Minstrel was much better backed than Glentruin, who was conceding Gloaming 81b. Gloaming began best, hut Nigfer Minstrel was first to turn for ome. The two-year-old drew away, but the older horses went after him and he was beaten a furlong and nhalf from home. Glentruin drew alongside Gloaming at the distance, hut in the run to the post the champion asserted his superiority and won by a neck. Nigger Minstrel a length away. A FAVOURITE’S SUCCESS. Lady Bentinck was hacked like a certainty for the Hopeful Stakes because of her previous form at the meeting. Lady Bentinok and Bonideer led on to the course proper, and in the run home Lady Bentinok lasted long enough to win by a length from Siaosi, who was just ahead of Lake Uru, Rachael and Palladeen. Bon March lost her rider at the start. PENELOPHON WINS AGAIN. Considering Ihapotoa to have been unlucky in the Douro Cup, bettors 6ent her out favourite for the Melrose Handicap, in which the next in demand were Penelophon -and tho Higfine bracket (Parorangi and Sir Pam), mperial Spark began well and for a while led from Penelophon, and at the five furlongs the leaders wei-e Pantagruel and Panim. At the turn for home Penelophon was in charge from ikh&potoa and Panim, and in the' run

homo Penelophon won by a length. Pantagruel was a fair third and Bay ana fourth. LOVESIGN’S DECISIVE VICTORY. Gold Light and Enthusiasm were hotter backed than Roseday for the Summer Oup and next in demand was Queen March. Quest took up the running as soon as the field was released, but Lovesign ran past him at the five furlong post and going across the top was well clear of the Trentham gelding. with Martian Miss, Gold Light ana Roseday handy. Lovesign led into the straight by four lengths from Gold Light with Roseday, wide out, coming fast. Roseday accounted for Gold Light, but made little impression on Lovesign who won by three lengths. Gold Light was a fair third, Queen March fourth, Wild Hind fifth, Area sixth, and then came Quest and Enthusiasm. ANOTHER EASY WIN. Highland was favourite for the Consolation Handicap, considerably better backed than Bcnetter, Winning Hit and Mantua, while the outsider of the field was Kao Tane. The field was well hunched turning out of the straight, and at the mile Ardour was showing the way to Mantua, Winning Hit and Zero Hour, with Highland last. Kao Tane proved his position going along the hack, and on the bend the order was Ardour, Winning Hit, Kao Tane, Little River, Zero Hour. Winning Hit and Ardour turned for home together, with Bonetter challenging or. the outer and Little River pushing up on the inner. Little River drew clear at the distance and went away to win by three lengths from Mantua, with Bonetter third, Ardour fourth, Winning Hit fifth, Zero Hour sixth, Highland seventh and Kao Tane a had la6t. THE OPEN SPRINT. Tukia was a short-priced favourite for the Oity Handicap and there was solid support for Rational while everything else was paying a good price. Civility, as usual, began smartly and led on to the course proper, with Santonio handy and Tukia and Rational dose up. Tukia at once challenged Civility but made no impression, and m the end was beaten by a' neck by Last Crust, who finished well. Santonio was a poor fourth and Rational, who ran badly, was at the head of the yext bunch. A HUGE DIVIDEND. There was even wagering on the Kaitoke Handicap with which tho meeting was concluded. After a long delay at the start the field was sent away to an even dispatch. Muria found, her feet very fast and led into the straight with Geranial coming fast. Two furlongs from home there Was some crowding. Geranial was just ahead of several others at the distance, where Giantkiller came on the outside with an irresistible run and won by a length from Piquant, who also finished well. Geranial and Entre Nous deadheated for third place. The winner paid over a third of a century. TOTALISATOR FIG GRES. Tho totulisator figures for the day were £67,100 as compared with £63.693 for the third day last year. 1(100 100 4
