GOOD SWIMMING
DOMINION RECORD BROKEN, HADF-MIDE CHAMPIONSHIP * DECIDED. Some particularly good- swimming was witnessed at the Waitematn Club's Carnival held the other evening (writes an Auckland correspondent). A new; ladies’ record for the quar-ter-mile was established by Miss Gwitha Shand, formerly of Christchurch, but now a member of the Waitemata Club, who made a successful attempt to reduce Miss Pauline Hoeft’s New Zealand record of 6min 26 3-Sseo. Miss Shand, who was paced by Mr J. Enwright (100 yards New Zealand champion for 1921-22-23), swam strongly over the entire distance in the record time of 6min Bsec, eclipsing Miss Hoeft’s time by 17 3-sseo. Tile half-mile championship of Auckland drew four competitors, and was retained by E. V. Cunnold, the previous holder.. With half the distance completed, Cunnold was slightly ahead of E. Bradley and D. Pelham, who were about 14ft in front of C. Welson. Completing the twentieth lap, Cunnold had further improved his advantage, with Pelham and Bradley together, and Welson nearly half a lap behind the leader. In the final stages of the race, Pelham showed unexpected staying powers, and spurted ahead of Bradley, but failed to overtake Cunnold, who won by 14ft 'j® 4-ssec. Bradley finished third some seconds later, being onehalf of a lap in front of Welson. t >^le . r good time was registered by ”■ Enwright in the first heat of the 100 yards club handicap, which he won in 69 4-sseo. This time is only I-ssec more than the record established by Deo Kronfeld last week, when be covered the distance in 59 3-ssec. This was the first occasion that the distance had been done under 60sec by a New Zealand swimmer.
