MARVELLOUS ESCAPE

EXPRESS TRAIN SMASHES CART. DRIVER THROWN CLEAR. Per Press Association. TIMARU, January 24. The south hound express hit a delivery cart at a crossing near St. An drew’s. The driver, Kennara, was thrown clear and only badly shaken. The horse, also uninjured, bolted with the shafts, the vehicle being smashed to matchwood. The engine driver whistled but was not heard by Kennard, on account of thf. pounding surf on the beach nearby and the southerly wind. Pieces of the vehicle were picked up over 50 yards away. The driver had a marvellous escape from death.
