LEVY ON FARMERS
AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL. ACTION DEFERRED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright SYDNEY, December 20. A hill providing for a compulsory) levy of an amount to be annually decided by the Australian Meat Council on the owners of cattle and sbeeg throughout the Commonwealth has been: tabled in the Assembly. The levy wiR be collected by the Government of earn* State. . „ , . . Mr O. W. Oakes, Colonial Treasurer, stated that the bill, which was for the encouragement ana improvement of the meat indurtry, would not be proceeded with, pending the receipt of a report from a joint committee of both Houses, which was inquiring into the whole question.
It is proposed that the money raised by the lew shall be used by the Australian Meat Council, whose activities correspond in a measure with those of tho New Zealand Meat Board.
