TECHNICAL COLLEGE

BREAK-UP CEREMONY MAYO® DISTRIBUTES AWARDS TO STUDENTS. NEED FOB TRAINING URGED. The annual break-up ceremony in connection with the Wellington Technical College was held at the Town Hall Concert Chamber yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large attendance of pupils, and their parents and friends. Councillor W. H. Bennett (chairman of the Technical College Board of Governors) presided, and there were also present the Mayor (Mr ®. A. Wright, M. 8.), Councillor T. Forsyth (chairman of the Wellington Education Board), and Mr J. H. Howell (director of the college). The platform was handsomely decorated for the occasion with the Technical College colours, the school motto, “Que Servit Ule Maximus’’—“Who Serves Is Greatest”—occupying a prominent position. Carols and choruses —“Good King Wenoeislas” Beethoven’s “Hymn to Creation,” “The Carnival,” and “Noel”—were admirably rendered by the school choir. , CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS. In a brief address, tho chairman strongly advised the pupils not to leave school too soon, as so many were inclined to do in the restlessness of youth, but to remain at the college and profit by the instruction given, which would fit them to take better positions later on. It was much to be desired, for their own sakes and for the sake of the community as a whole, that they should learn good trades rather than drift into the ranks of unskilled labour 01 “blind alley” occupations. He congratulated the director, his staff and the pupils .upon the very excellent work done during the past year, and upon the good athletic record of the school. He thanked the Mayor for being present that afternoon, and for bis constant readiness to help in any way. (Applause.) The Mayor heartily supported all that the chairman had said as to the importance of not leaving school too soon. He urged the importance of a good technical training, and pointed out how much greater were the facilities available for such instruction to-day than when he was young. Because of that fact, he said, the need for training was all the greater. It meant that competition in the future would he more keen—certainly not less keen — than in the past. Every day he had men coming to him as Mayor, asking for work: and he invariably found that they iwere men who had no trade, men who had never learnt any trade. And generally that was because they had left school early, tempted by the high wa'ges obtainable for unskilled labour. This learang school early was often the fault of the hoys themselves. They were headstrong, and refused to he ‘guided by the experience and advioe of their parents. He referred in high terms to the good work done by the school, and expressed regret that more progress had not been made with the buildings for the new oollege, which, when completed, would so greatly facilitate the work both of the staff and the pupils. (Applause.) Mr Forsyth also congratulated the staff and the pupils on the work of the year.

The annual report, dealt with elsewhere, was read by the director (Mr J. H. Howell), and the Mayor then presented the awards and certificates as under. The usual voess of thanks and seasonable greetings followed, and a verse of the National Anthem fittingly closed the proceedings.
