“KEEP TO THE LEFT”
NEW FOOTPATH EDICT. FAIR SUCCESS ATTAINED. The red-letter day in Wellington traffic oame and went quietly enough. The chalk line down the centre of the pavements and the repeated admonition “Keep to the Left” in white paint, to say nothing of the notioe boards -bearing a similar inscription, have had their effect. The new footpath rule has been very well established. The crowded pavements on Saturday made walking difficult and observance of the edict on the first day was only fair, but yesterday, in the busier streets the pedestrians followed the injunction in much better fashion. Women have been the chief offenders so far, and a few old ladies and forgetful business men were generally to be found yesterday braving the stream of traffic on the wrong side. But an improvement was noticeable, and footpath lines, which will he renewed in a few days’ time, are a continual reminder to the unthinking. REMARKS BY MAYOR. On the subject the Mayor (Mr R. A. Wright) remarked yesterday that it would probably be found necessary to keep the lines well marked upon the pavements for a couple of months at least while the public acquires the habit. Mr Wright feels that a constant reminder will be necessary for some time, or else that the footpaths will once again become greatly confused.
