Hie high rents charged for houses were referred to at a meeting of creditors at Dunedin; the bankrupt, who | swore that his net average earnings were only £3 10b per week, having declared that he had been forced' bo take over a house at £2 per week, as he could not get anything decent at a rental under that amount. Hie creditors made it plain that they did not altogether agree with him, especially ae his debts had been accumulating menacingly when he acquired the additional liability. “We know it was foolish, but it’s done,” remarked counsel philosophically. ‘‘You do not find the business men here. —not on this side of the table,” he added .with a suggestive smile at the other side, where the creditors and their representatives were seated. “Nor here,” ejaculated one of them, “we’re the ‘mugs.’ ” (Laughter.) Counsel added that it be some consolation to tho creditors to know that bankrupt had not paid his rent, as he owed over £2O in that direction.
