NEED OF SETTLERS

CANADA’S EMPTY SPACES AN INTENSIVE CAMPAIGN TO ATTRACT IMMIGRANTS. LIVELY COMPETITION. By Telegraph—Press A=sn—Oopvriaht Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received November 25, 5.5 p.m.) MONTREAL, November 23. Tho Ottawa correspondent of the “Star” indicates that Canada will soon become a lively competitor against Australia for immigrants, because she needs settlers to develop the oountry. The Dominion Immigration Office estimates that 125,000 immigrants will have entered at the close of the calendar year, but a disquieting fact is that the exodus exceeds the influx. For this reason the Government is planning an intensive campaign to attract British settlers. The Immigration Department is endeavouring to secure a reduction in steamship rates, on which the -companies have not committed themselves. The Government further intends to remove all entrance restrictions, and to defray parents’ outlay on children’s passage®. The officials hope that by this means the influx in 1924 will he trebled.
