AMERICAN MEAT TRUST

GOVERNMENT TAKES ACTION. LEGAL BATTLE EXPECTED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. WASHINGTON, November 23. Another legal battle is impending between the “Big Five’’ meat packers and the United States Government. Tho Secretary for Agriculture, Mr H. C. Wallace, lias attempted, under tho provisions of recent Federal laws governing stockyards, to place Government auditors in the offices of the packing companies, with powers to investigate and publish all facts concerning their business. Mr Wallace claims that the nation is vitally concerned with the packers’ activities, and should oe informed in regard to them. The Swift, Cudahy, and Nelson companies have refused access to the auditors, declaring their approach an invasion of constitutional rights. It is expected that the Armour and Morris companies will adopt the same procedure, and the cose will be fought in the courts.
