SCHOOL ATHLETES

SATURDAY’S SPORTS WELLINGTON COLLEGE BOYS ON THE RUNNING TRACK. FINE PERFORMANCE. Tho secondary schools athletic championships were decided at Athletic Park on Saturday in good weather, on a fair track, and before a moderate attendance of people. The meeting was conducted by the Wellington Secondary Schools’ Athletic Association, which was organised in 1922 for the purpose of promoting and controlling joint athletic meetings, or other sporting activities, open only to the boys’ secondary schools of Wellington. The following schools comprise the association :—Wellington Boys’ College, Scots College, St. Patrick’s College, Technical College, Wellesley College, Petono District High School, and Hutt District High School. IN THREE CLASSES. Tho first athletic championship meeting was held at the Basin Reserve, in November, 1922. and resulted as follows : Wellington College, 81 points; Scots College, 37J points; St. Patrick’s College, 23 points; Technical College, 17J points; Petono D.H.S.. 2 points; Hutt D.H.S., 1 , point; Wellesley College, 1 point. Wellington College was thus the holder of the athletic championship shield, which was presented to the association in 1922 by Dr. MeEvedy, and through Saturday’s success, retains it. For the purpose of inter-college competitions, contestants are divided into three classes—junior, intermediate, and senior. Junior are those under 144 years on October Ist; intermediate, those under I'll years on October Ist; senior, those under 20 yettrs on October Ist. It; is intended to extend the association’s activities to include control of inter-college competitions in other branches of sport when conditions will permit. The schools are indicated in the ’ list of results as follow: —Wellington Collego (WN), Scots College (S), St. Patrick’s College (St. P), Technical College (T), Wellesley College (WY). STANDARDS BEATEN. Some fine performances were registered. In the senior 100yds C. H. Jenkins (Wellington) was timed to do 10 2-ssec, thus heating the standard and the previous best (10 3-ssec). In the intermediate halfmile R. Anderson (St. Patrick’s) ran 2min 18 4-ssec, easily beating the standard (2min 18sec). He won the senior halfmile in 2min 9 l-ssec, again beating standard time, 2min 13sec. Jenkins, by running the senior 220yds in 22min 3-ssec. beat ihis last year’s performance and the standard. The standards were bettered alse by Thompson (Wellington) and Smith (Wellington) in the intermediate and junior 220yds events. J. D. Gray cleared the bar in the high jump at sft 34in, beating the sft 2in standard. In the junior and intermediate long jump contests the standard was improved on. THE RESULTS.
